When handwriting becomes a wall
In almost every Danish family there are documents that time has made unreadable: a bundle of letters, a diary, a recipe book or a single crucial paper. The script is old and Gothic, and whoever could read it may no longer be here. The documents are often kept like a treasure, precisely because they matter – yet the content stays out of reach.
Why old handwriting is tricky
The challenge is rarely the script alone. Gothic letterforms resemble each other, the ink has faded, the paper is stained, and the writer wrote for themselves – with personal abbreviations and an old spelling that doesn't follow today's rules. A good transcription accounts for the script, the orthography and the old phrasing, making the text understandable for today's reader.
